Hearing his heart

I noticed his behavior seemed really off. He was throwing a fit and didn't want to talk to me.  Something inside me said that he just needed some time with mom.  So, I pulled him aside and whispered in his ear, "Hey, I have an idea. I think you and I should have a date."  His eyes lit up and a smile made it's way across his formally soured face.

"How about tomorrow morning? We can do anything you want."  The wall that had been there just moments before dropped as he nodded his head.

"Can we have breakfast together?" He asked, "And play memory?"

"Of course." I replied.  "Anything you want."

The next morning Ryan could hardly contain his joy as I cooked the two of us breakfast.  We carried our plates of eggs, toast, potatoes and oranges (oh and hot coco for him and coffee for me) to the guest room so we could have time alone.
He beat me the first round and I beat him the next.
He was a changed boy afterwards.  It wasn't anything fancy, just an hour of my undivided attention.
It made me realize that I need to do this more often. I need to give up more of my selfish self- take time to hear their hearts and meet them where they're  at.

That reminds me that I need to have another date with Caleb! One of his favorite things to do is to have cheese and crackers on the floor in his bedroom. :-)
